Brief info

Professor Halmagyi AO received his BSc (Med) at the University of Sydney in 1968. He continued his studies at the University with a MBBS in 1971 and later his MD in 1995. He was appointed as a Consultant Neurologist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in 1979 and continues to hold this position today where he is the director of the Eye and Ear Research Unit, which is the national referral centre for the diagnosis and treatment of patients from all over Australia with difficult balance disorders. He has received many awards for his work including the Hallpike Nylen Prize from the Barany Society in 1996 and the George Davey Howells Prize in 2008. Most notably, he developed the “Halmagyi Head Impulse Test”, which used around the world as a very quick, simple and effective indicator of the functional level of semicircular canal functioning.

Balance disorders represent a critical challenge for the ageing population. This lecture will provide a comprehensive overview of the multifactorial nature of equilibrium impairment in seniors, exploring the physiological changes of the ageing vestibular system, including the prevalence of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) and age-related vestibulopathy. Clinical evaluation strategies will be detailed, focusing on distinguishing between peripheral and central aetiologies with a review of multidisciplinary intervention strategies.
