PERIOPERATIVE CARE AND THE OLDER BRAIN

– Lecture 30 minutes followed by 10 minutes Q & A

As the number of older people undergoing surgery continues to rise, more needs to be done to improve outcomes.  These are often complicated by multiple comorbidities, particularly those patients with cognitive impairment and dementia.  The focus, especially in the acute setting such as hip fracture, can often lead to poor outcomes that then often fall to other specialties who have not been closely involved in decision making. This presentation will focus on how targeted management strategies and developing closer ties with surgical and anaesthetic colleagues can lead to better patient outcomes, especially in the challenging space of delirium.
