Brief info

Dr Mahoney is an academic neurologist graduating from University College Dublin with honours in 2006 and also undertook additional undergraduate training in neurology at Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts’s General Hospital. Following this, he completed his basic physician training in Dublin before undertaking a PhD at the Queen Square Institute of Neurology, University College London focusing on neuroimaging in Frontotemporal Dementia. He then completed specialty training in neurology at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He was awarded the Association of British Neurologists Australasian Fellowship in 2018 and completed his training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Concord Repatriation General Hospital. He is currently a staff specialist at Liverpool Hospital and is an investigator on a number of clinical drug trials targeting neurodegenerative disease.

DIAGNOSIS AND MANAGEMENT OF FRONTOTEMPORAL DEMENTIA

This lecture will provide a comprehensive update on the clinical landscape of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) covering current diagnostic frameworks including the shift to incorporate early behavioural symptoms and clinical biomarkers.  Management strategies will be explored through an interdisciplinary lens, emphasising supportive care and symptomatic pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions.  The session will also highlight emerging therapies and ongoing trials.
